Welcome to the Southern Builders blog, where we not only share helpful insights for mobile homeowners, but also take time to honor what truly matters. With Memorial Day approaching, we pause to reflect on the meaning behind this important American holiday—one that goes far beyond barbecues, family gatherings, and the unofficial start of summer.
At its core, Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance—a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. For many of us, it’s also a time to reconnect with our values, express gratitude, and reflect on the freedoms we enjoy every day.
Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day began after the Civil War, a conflict that claimed more lives than any war in American history and necessitated the creation of national cemeteries.
In the years following the war, Americans across the country began holding springtime tributes to fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and flags, and reciting prayers in their memory. While various towns and cities held these observances independently, the practice gained momentum nationwide.
In 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Union veterans, officially proclaimed May 30 as a day for “strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country.” That date was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle, giving it national relevance.
After World War I, the holiday evolved to honor all American military personnel who died in any war, not just the Civil War. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by Congress and is now observed on the last Monday in May.
Memorial Day is more than just a day off from work or the start of summer vacation. It’s a powerful reminder of the cost of freedom and the courage of those who protect it. It’s a time to honor not only the fallen but also the families they left behind—the spouses, children, parents, and friends who carry their memories forward.
For many, it’s a deeply personal day, marked by visits to cemeteries and memorials, participation in community parades, and moments of quiet reflection. Across the nation, people lower flags to half-staff, observe moments of silence at 3:00 PM (the National Moment of Remembrance), and share stories of those who served with honor.
You don’t have to be in uniform to show your respect on Memorial Day. Here are a few simple, meaningful ways to honor those who served:
Attend a local ceremony or parade.
Visit a veterans’ cemetery to place flags or flowers on graves.
Display the American flag respectfully at your home.
Pause for a moment of silence at 3:00 PM local time.
Donate to veterans’ support organizations that help military families and wounded warriors.
Share stories and memories of loved ones who served.
As we go about our work helping homeowners build safer, more secure homes with the Perma-Roof system, we’re always mindful of the freedoms that make our lives and livelihoods possible. This Memorial Day, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women and to honor their legacy with gratitude.
We thank every family who has served, sacrificed, and supported our country through military service. From our team at Southern Builders—we remember, we honor, and we thank you.
